The formula every AI film budget reduces to

Two things stand out.

First, a short film is cheap either way. At three minutes, workflow mistakes cost you a few hundred dollars at most, which is why short-film cost guides can honestly quote numbers under $200.

Second, a feature is where the gap bites. The lean and typical columns differ by about $8,000 for the same 90-minute script, and none of that difference is the script. Two changes produce all of it: three times the per-second rate, and twice the attempts. Neither is fixed for you, and both are settled before you generate a frame.

The costs the per-second rate hides

A rate card prices one successful second of video. A film needs much more than that:

  • First frames. One per shot, so about 1,400 on a feature. Each is cheap, but together they add up, and they are also the thing that lowers every other number (see the next section).
  • Failed attempts. Every rejected take costs the full rate. This is the attempts term in the formula above, and it is the line most rate-card estimates leave out entirely.
  • Voice and dialogue. Native audio covers ambience and short lines. Performance dialogue is usually generated separately, with lip sync.
  • Music and sound design.
  • Upscaling and finishing for your delivery resolution.

The three levers that move the total, in order

1. Attempts per shot. Halving attempts halves the generation bill. Moving to a cheaper model or a lower tier can save more on paper, but it costs you something on screen; cutting wasted takes costs you nothing. That is why this lever goes first — it is the only one here without a trade-off. The most effective way to cut attempts is to approve a still first frame before paying for motion. Composition, wardrobe, character likeness and lighting are the most common reasons a motion take gets rejected, and all four can be checked on a still that costs a fraction of a video second.

2. Draft tier. Block timing, camera movement and staging on a cheap draft setting. Pay the full rate once, on the take you will actually ship.

3. Resolution. Generate at a modest resolution and upscale for delivery. Every failed attempt then costs less, and across 1,400 shots that adds up.
